Inside-Out Speaking Confidence

Confidence

Eleanor Hunter argues the entire self-improvement approach to public speaking runs backwards. The outside-in model says you're not good enough yet, so you acquire tips and tricks — posture, hand gestures, storytelling, eliminating ums and ahs — and only once you have them will you be confident enough to speak. Her diagnosis, borrowing the line 'the problem is not the problem, the problem is your solution to the problem', is that your speaking ability was never the problem. The problem is believing you're a bad speaker and that others are judging you, which makes you protect yourself by staying quiet. Since you already speak freely with close friends, family and loved ones, the capability exists. The work is inside-out: unlearn the beliefs about being terrible and having no value, rather than bolting techniques onto a self you've judged inadequate.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Catch the outside-in story

Notice the sequence you're running: I'm not interesting, a conversation didn't land, therefore I'll learn to be charming and charismatic, sit up straight, use posture and hands, tell stories, be exciting, get rid of my ums and ahs — and only then will I be good enough to speak up.

Watch out Hunter's tell is the word 'then' — 'only when I have learned all these tips and tricks will I be good enough' postpones speaking indefinitely.

  2. 2

    Reidentify the actual problem

Apply the phrase Hunter cites: the problem is not the problem, the problem is your solution to the problem. The problem is not your inability to speak — it's you thinking you are a bad speaker, or that other people are judging you.

  3. 3

See how the protection creates the symptom

Because you believe you're being judged, you protect yourself by not speaking, by staying quiet. Hunter names that protective silence as the problem itself, not evidence of a missing skill.

  4. 4

Find where you already speak freely

Identify the situations where you're totally free — with close friends, family, loved ones. Hunter says everyone has those places. The proof of capability is already in your life.

Pro tip Treat these as your baseline evidence: the person who can already do it and the person in the difficult room are the same person.

  5. 5

    Unlearn rather than acquire

Work inside-out: me the way I am right now knows how to speak. Unlearn the beliefs you hold about yourself — about being terrible, about having no value — and the ability that already exists shows up in the harder rooms.

In the wild

The shy person on the sofa

Hunter's scenario: you're shy, at a drinks event, sitting on the sofa while everyone around you chats to each other and nobody chats to you. Thoughts start — maybe I'm not interesting. Someone tries to talk to you, the conversation doesn't go anywhere because they get distracted, and you feel them turning away. In that moment it's very easy to conclude the fix is to get better at speaking: learn charm, charisma, posture, hand use, storytelling, cut the ums and ahs. Hunter's reading is that the shy person already knows how to speak — what happened on that sofa was the belief about being judged doing its protective work.

The diagnosis moves from missing skills to unexamined self-belief.

Common mistakes

Buying skills to fix a belief

Techniques bolted onto the conviction that you're inadequate leave the conviction intact. Hunter's whole objection is that the outside-in order is wrong, not that the techniques are worthless.

Reading silence as proof you can't speak

Staying quiet is a protective response to feeling judged, not evidence of missing ability. Treating it as evidence deepens the belief that caused it.

Ignoring where you already speak well

Free, fluent conversation with friends and family is direct disconfirming evidence, and Hunter says everyone has those places. Overlooking it sustains a self-image the facts don't support.
