The Three Types of Burnout

The diagnostic model behind the Sustain section of Feel-Good Productivity. Burnout isn't one thing, so one remedy can't fix it. Overexertion burnout comes from packing too much into a single day and running out of energy partway through it. Depletion burnout builds over the long term from not taking enough breaks and not recharging, until energy levels are basically gone. Misalignment burnout is the strange one: you're doing well at the thing, but something feels off because the work doesn't sit with your values. Each type has its own chapter and its own remedy — load management, science-backed recharge, or values work — and matching the wrong remedy to the wrong type is why so many attempted fixes fail.

How to run it

  1. 1

Treat the energy signal as data, not weakness

Notice which pattern you're actually in before choosing a fix — the timescale and texture of the exhaustion tells you the type.

  2. 2

    Check for overexertion

If you're fine most days but hit a wall partway through the packed ones, you're trying to fit too much into a single day. The fix is load, not rest.

Pro tip Say no earlier: an abundance of good inbound opportunities is exactly how overexertion sneaks in.

  3. 3

    Check for depletion

If your energy has drained steadily over months regardless of any individual day, the cause is insufficient breaks and recharge. Apply proper CALM recovery rather than a heavier schedule of rest-shaped scrolling.

Watch out A single holiday won't refill a tank that months of no recharge emptied.

  4. 4

    Check for misalignment

If you're performing well and it still feels off, test the work against your own values. This is the type that looks like nothing is wrong.

Pro tip The tell is 'I'm doing fine at this and I'm not sure it's fulfilling.'

  5. 5

    Apply the matching remedy

Overexertion needs less packed into the day; depletion needs a real recharge practice; misalignment needs values clarification so you can work in line with them.

Watch out Applying a rest remedy to a misalignment problem returns you refreshed to the same wrong thing.

  6. 6

    Re-run the diagnosis periodically

Ali still actively thinks about all three types to keep a career he wants to sustain for a very long time. Re-check as the shape of your work changes.

Pro tip Fold it into a quarterly review rather than waiting for a crisis.

In the wild

Ali's misalignment burnout as a junior doctor

Around 2019, a year into working as a doctor, Ali felt something was off. He was doing the job and doing it well, but wasn't sure it was right for him or particularly fulfilling. He now labels this misalignment burnout — nothing was visibly failing, the work simply didn't match what actually gave him meaning, which turned out to be teaching rather than practising.

Naming it led him into the exercises that revealed he'd rather be a medical educator than a medical practitioner.

Absurd inbound after success

In a content-creation career there is always more you could be doing, and once some success arrives the volume of inbound opportunity becomes, in Ali's words, completely absurd — in a good way. The risk is saying yes to everything, which quietly builds an unsustainable load and pushes him toward overexertion.

He now deliberately thinks about all three burnout types when deciding what to take on, to keep the career sustainable long-term.

Common mistakes

Assuming all burnout is fixed by a holiday

Rest addresses depletion. It does nothing for a schedule that's overpacked every day or for work that conflicts with your values.

Ignoring the off feeling while performance looks fine

Misalignment burnout is easy to dismiss precisely because you're succeeding at the thing. Ali only acted on it when he stopped to ask what he actually wanted.

Believing you can grind now and relax later

The 'your twenties are for grinding, relax when you have kids' story doesn't survive contact with reality — Ali notes most parents he knows don't relax once they have kids.
