The mechanism: someone grabs a small edge, which forces everyone else to match it or lose out, ratcheting the whole system into a worse state that no one wanted and no one can escape alone. Her canonical image is a stadium where one person stands for a better view, forcing the rows behind to stand until everyone is standing and no better off. The same shape drives deforestation, the AI safety-versus-speed race, and Instagram beauty filters. It's an unstable equilibrium, a ball perched on a hill, toppled by a single mildly selfish act. Boeree uses it to show how deforestation and the AI race share exactly this structure.
