Cook structures her entire life as a Venn diagram of three zones. Profession is the money work only you should be doing, the artist or owner work, not admin you shouldn't touch. Obsession is the one thing outside work you're deliberately trying to get world-class at, pursued with a mission, for her powerlifting. Decompression is where you completely switch off: travel, friends, doing nothing. The twist is that although it's drawn as a Venn diagram, the overlaps are coloured in as no-go zones. There is to be no multitasking, no answering email between bench presses, no thinking about work while relaxing. Because each activity is ring-fenced, your default mode network can quietly chew on your profession while you're deep in your obsession, and vice versa, so answers 'just arrive'. Full intentional commitment to one zone also removes the guilt that usually contaminates the others.
Origin
Extracted from Deep Dive with Ali Abdaal. Cook built the framework around her own routine of five hours of deep work then powerlifting with her phone in airplane mode, and has taught it to lifestyle entrepreneurs and parents who use the zones to shed guilt.
Core principles
- 01Multitasking is the enemy; overlap between zones destroys both
- 02Intentionally committing to one zone removes guilt from the others
- 03Recovery is productive because it feeds your default mode network
- 04The same success system can be applied inside each zone
- 05Boundaries from an obsession stop work expanding to fill all day
How to run it
- 1
Define your profession
Pin down the money-making work that only you can do, excluding admin you shouldn't be doing yourself.
- 2
Choose one real obsession
Pick a single pursuit outside work you'll treat with performance intent, not a casual hobby.
Pro tip It must genuinely light you up; a forced 'approved obsession' won't work.
Watch out Don't pick something you only half-care about; the intensity is the point.
- 3
Name your decompression
Identify where you completely switch off, such as travel, friends or doing nothing.
- 4
Colour in the overlaps as no-go
Forbid multitasking across zones: no work in decompression, no phone during your obsession.
Pro tip Put your phone in airplane mode during obsession time to enforce the boundary.
Watch out Half-working on a Saturday because you 'should' is exactly the overlap that ruins both.
- 5
Commit fully, one zone at a time
Explicitly commit to whichever zone you're in so the others carry no guilt.
- 6
Let the zones cross-solve
Trust that deep immersion in one zone lets your default mode network solve problems in another.
Pro tip Return to your profession right after your obsession to catch the answers that surface.
In the wild
Cook does five intense hours of deep work she planned the day before, then trains for powerlifting with her phone in airplane mode from warm-up to finish. She refuses to touch it, so her default mode network wears away at work problems while she lifts, and when she returns to the laptop the answers have arrived.
→ World-class output in two domains without multitasking between them.
Cook has taught the framework to parents, who value that it doesn't just say 'work has to stop' but reframes parenting as an intentional obsession zone. Declaring 'this is my obsession, here are my kids' lets them stop half-checking their phones and drop the guilt of feeling they should be replying to one more email.
→ Guilt-free presence with their kids by committing fully to the zone.
Common mistakes
Living in the overlaps
Half-working while relaxing, or half-relaxing while working, means neither zone gets full focus and both suffer.
Picking an obsession you don't love
Choosing an obsession from a list of 'approved' options rather than something that genuinely lights you up kills the performance intensity that makes it work.
Is it for you?
Best for
Ambitious people who want to be excellent at both their work and a serious pursuit outside it.
Not ideal for
Those in a season needing total flexibility who can't ring-fence distinct blocks of time.
